Newton Corridor

In a city made up of unique neighborhoods, perhaps none is more unique than Old Algiers, the only historic neighborhood on the West Bank of New Orleans.

Newton Street is the commercial center of Old Algiers, with a long tradition of providing convenient neighborhood services. Newton Street also claims a large share of New Orleans musical heritage, having hosted performances from such legends as Ray Charles and Billie Holiday. It is a true mixed-use corridor comprised of single and two-family homes, stand-alone businesses, and corner storefronts with upstairs housing.

Although its heyday has long since passed, Newton Street has great potential. Housing throughout Old Algiers has been undergoing significant revitalization, and this is expected to continue:

• Algiers benefits from having remained high and dry during Hurricane Katrina.
• The Naval Support Facility adjacent to Newton Street is slated to be converted into a Federal   City, bringing significant investment and employment.
• The Fischer public housing complex is being redeveloped with the goal of bringing mixed-    income, traditional-scale housing to the area.
• A new Riverfront Development Plan has been adopted by the city, and the riverfront end of   Newton Street stands to benefit.

Old Algiers Main Street encourages investment on Newton Street of neighborhood services for current and future residents.
